Dreamy. Dramatic. Romantic.
Hand-crafted leather.
Are they Venetian ball masks?
Are they Steam-punk?
Are they Victoriana?
Aren’t they fun?
Somewhere Soon Creations is the brainchild of the artist Holly Standbrook, who is based in the St.Neots area of Cambridgeshire, England. Maybe it’s something in the water, maybe it’s something in the blood, maybe it’s just the natural the creativity of the English shires? Whatever it is – it’s fabulous!
Perhaps it’s in the history … St Neots eh?First the Saxons kicked around the area for a while, and then the Normans rebuilt the old priory and after a few centuries someone else thought that it might be a bit of a wheeze to build a town up against the south wall.
The town is named after the Cornish monk Saint Neot whose bones had earlier been stolen from the other St Neots, the village on Bodmin Moor, and which were concealed in the priory. Skeletal skulduggery notwithstanding, the new town was granted a Market Charter in 1130 and has been sleeping peacefully under the gentle English sun ever since.
A mere eight-hundred and eighty-three years later Holly is showing the Saxons, Normans and Cornish monks how it’s done by going to market with this magnificent range of hand-made leather artistic chattels and bespoke finery.

Outrageous. Elegant. Wild. Off-the-wall and running through the meadow shouting ‘boing boing boing I’m the new Tooth Fairy’. These are all words and phrases used to descibed Holly’s work.

Holly’s studio is a clutter of materials, craft knives and hand-drawn and hand-cut templates that have either been used or are awaiting their moment in the limelight. As with all leatherwork the physical process is a mixture of delicacy of touch applied with strength. Made-to-measure items can actually be moulded to the contours of a client’s face, so that eye-holes and fastenings are exactly where they need to be for comfort – after all, if a lady’s going to play the part of a kitten on a hot tin roof, she may as well do so in comfort.

From a distance it might be Maori.
Closer to, the lady is simply going to the Hellfire Club Ball, incognito.
‘I have always depended on not being recognised by strangers.’

The briliance of the designs lies in the scope of their sheer madness – designs for the vixen run with the same pack as the designs for the fox.
Inspiration for the designs can spring literally from anywhere – a dramatic flower in a sun-soaked walled garden, a chilling line in a favourite Grimm’s fairytale book in the abandoned nursery wing or even from the battered clockwork of an old tin soldier next to a trunk in the attic.
A sketch, a paper template and a sprinkling of slightly Gothic drama et voila; a fresh mask is born.
